LEAGUE RULES
Everything you need to know about how the Camrose Adult Mixed Volleyball league runs.
League Format
- •Each tier plays a round-robin schedule, so your team faces every other team in your tier once per cycle.
- •At the end of each cycle, top teams may be promoted and bottom teams relegated between tiers to keep competition balanced.
- •Teams start the season in positions based on last year's playoff finish — new teams are slotted in based on self-ranking.
- •Year-long standings determine the playoff divisions (Division 1, 2, and 3).
- •Year-End Tournament: March 19-20, 2027 at the High School and possibly Jack Stuart. Please ensure your team members are aware of and available for these dates.
- •All matches are played at the Camrose gym locations shown on the schedule.
Scheduling
- •Games are played on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings at 7:00 PM and 8:30 PM.
- •Team captains submit preferred days and times, and any days or times their team cannot play.
- •The schedule is built around those preferences, but balanced competition and court availability come first.
- •Schedules are built in 5-week rotations, with teams playing one game per week. Check the Schedule page for your upcoming matches.
- •We occasionally play on a Friday. We will try to give a heads-up before the schedule is made so teams can volunteer for that day — if there are no volunteers, who plays will be decided by random draw.
League Fees
- •League fees are $700 per team, payable to Camrose Adult Mixed Volleyball.
- •Due date: on or before October 23rd.
- •Payment: e-transfer to camroseamvb@gmail.com. Use your team name as the description (one transfer per team).
- •Late fee: $50 per week after October 23rd, unless prior arrangements are made.
Team Composition
- •There must always be a minimum of 3 women on the court — you can play with 3 women and 2 men, but not 3 men and 2 women.
- •You may play short-handed, but missing players become "Ghosts": a ghost takes a rotation spot and your team loses its serve on the ghost's rotation turn.
- •Each team must have a designated captain who is the main contact for scheduling, scores, and league updates.
- •If you are short players, use the sub list to fill your roster.
Substitutes
- •Teams short on players may bring in substitutes from the Subs list — or bring in any sub from outside the list.
- •Players are welcome to join the sub list even if they are already on a team.
- •Subs may specify which tiers and positions they are comfortable playing.
- •Players already rostered on another team may sub in another tier only as allowed by the league.
- •Captains can send sub requests directly from the Captain portal.
Match Play & Scoring
- •Games start at 7:00 PM and 8:30 PM. Ensure 7:00 PM games finish on time so the 8:30 PM games can start promptly.
- •Matches are best of 5 sets. Sets are to 25 points (rally scoring) and must be won by 2 points.
- •The 5th set, if needed, is a tie-breaker played to 15 points (rally scoring), win by 2.
- •If a 5th set is needed and you are left with limited time, decide ahead of time whether you will play to a lower point total (e.g. 9 or 11) or end in a tie and use points as the tie-breaker.
- •Net touches: please call your own team's net touches, even if incidental. We do not have referees.
- •Defaults: 10 minutes after the scheduled start time for each game (e.g., in a 7:00 PM game, playing at 7:14 PM means starting down 0-1).
- •The winning team must report scores in the Captain portal on the website, or text/email the league.
- •If a score is entered incorrectly, either captain can flag the match for correction and the league will fix it.
- •Standings are tracked by wins, with points used as tie-breakers.
- •Double-check with your opponent that you are playing the correct team.
- •If you can't field a team, contact the opposing team in advance to save them a trip.
Sweeping Duties
- •Teams are assigned sweeping duty on a rotating basis, shown on the Schedule page.
- •The assigned team is responsible for sweeping the gym floor on their assigned day.
- •Teams assigned to the 8:30 PM game at Jack Stuart must sweep after play — the schedule marks who is responsible.
- •Please complete your duty — clean courts keep the league running safely.
Sportsmanship
- •This is a recreational league. Referee your own games honestly and keep calls respectful.
- •Treat opponents, teammates, and the gym facilities with respect. Abusive language or unsafe play is not tolerated.
- •Disputes should be settled by the two captains on the court; if that fails, contact the league.
Safety & Facility Rules
- •Clean, non-marking indoor court shoes are required on the gym floor.
- •No food or drink other than water on the playing surface.
- •Net height: set all nets to 2.35m (jr. boys height), regardless of tier.
- •Jack Stuart School (200 Mt Pleasant Drive): rest the yellow bracket on top of the pin (pin through the hole). Nets and pads are under the stage (far right two doors).
- •Chester Ronning School (6206 43 Ave): the equipment room is in the NW corner of the gym.
- •ALWAYS use post pads to prevent injuries.
- •Gym access: doors unlock 15 minutes before each game and relock 15 minutes after start times. If expecting late players, have them use the doorbell or text someone inside — do NOT prop doors open.
- •Report any facility damage or safety hazard to the league right away.
